“Eyes Of” is a series of abstract portraits of artists whose vision has shaped or inspired my own, an exercise in trying to capture what they have seen. The artists participate by sending me a pair of their eyeglasses. I begin by taking a still-life photograph of the eyeglasses against a checkerboard backdrop, a nod to the scientific importance of optical illusions. I make a print and re-photograph the print through the lens of the artist’s eyeglasses. I continue this process until the original subject is barely recognizable; as the process iterates surprising results develop as a result of both the eyewear and the process itself. The resulting works are not only portraits but also an investigation into perception.
